Soy Pillar Candles - Three Reasons Why They Are Better

By Devin Krushanya

Soy candles have continued to grow in popularity for the past 10 or 15 years, but only in the past 5 years or so have soy pillar candles become a popular choice. However, you should be aware that the soy pillar candle is not made from 100% pure soy wax. In fact, when soy pillar candles were first introduced, many companies used wax blends that contained paraffin. In recent days, since more and more companies are trying to be greener, the vast majority of soy wax blends contain only soy wax and botanical oils such as palm oil. Even so, you should make sure that you soy pillar candle does not contain paraffin. If a company is advertising pure soy pillar candles, there's a chance that they may not be aware that the wax blend they're using contains other additives. In such cases, you should have the company contact their supplier to make sure there wax pillar blend contains only vegetable based additives.

In this article, I will be discussing three reasons why soy pillar candles may be better than paraffin based pillar candles.

1. A soy pillar candle will burn cleaner and longer.

As opposed to paraffin candles, soy candles do not release petro-carbon black soot into the air. Soy based candles are also less likely to produce allergies. Many believe that burning paraffin wax releases carcinogens into the air. Soy wax produces non-toxic white soot, and when burned properly, soy candles generally release little to no soot.

Very few people have any adverse reaction to soy candles, and if they do, it is most likely because of the fragrance used. On the other hand, many people get headaches when they burn paraffin pillar or jar candles. This is thought to have to do with the fact that paraffin candles a petroleum based and therefore release carbon based soot into the air.

Soy wax burns much cooler than paraffin candles because the melting point of soy wax is lower. Because of this, soy candles burn much longer as well. In fact, it is said that soy pillar candles and soy jar candles can burn up to 50% longer than their paraffin counterparts.

2. Soy pillar candles hold their shape more than their paraffin counterparts.

Soy pillar candles are very good at holding their shape even in the warmer months of the year because the botanical oils used in the soy wax blends make the wax more rigid as opposed to the natural viscous nature of pure soy wax. Paraffin candles will bulge out at the top when burned and can even lose their shape completely in the heat. Depending on the quality of the soy wax and the type of wick used, very often the entire candle is consumed as opposed to paraffin, where you can often have large amounts of wax leftover after the candle has completely burned down.

3. Soy wax has a better scent throw than paraffin wax.

The way the fragrance is dispersed into the air is called scent throw. This is another advantage of the cooler burning soy wax - it distributes the fragrance more consistently than paraffin. The fragrance is also thought to last longer because of this. Soy pillar candles do not contain as much fragrance as soy jar candles so it is a matter of preference when it comes to how much scent you want. The amount of fragrance contained in jar candles can often be very overpowering. Also, when a candle as too much fragrance, the candle will produce soot. Most of the time a soy pillar candle contains about 3 to 4 percent fragrance and as much as 6%. This makes for a strongly scented but not overly scented candle.
