By Viola Bontrager

Have you ever heard about the 'bug out bag'? It is a term that was born from the military expression bail out bag. When the military pilots prepare to land on enemy lands, they arm themselves with this bail out bag, which contains the essential tools for survival. The bug out bag is a borrowed concept in that it contains the survival tools necessary in urban environment.

You have several ways to choose the bug out bag contents. To begin with, you may visit a store to purchase a readymade kit. It contains all the basic necessities. You are free to add your daily requirement of medicines and nutritional supplements to it.

Bug out bags of different sizes and prices are for sale in the stores. Before you visit a store, first try to make a detailed, well-thought checklist of your own bug out bag. List carefully all the necessary tools needed for a long, say, three days emergency. Compare your own bug out bag checklist with the content lists of the bags on the shelves.

The survival gear essential to be put in the bug out bag checklist of a survivalist would be water for your washing and cooking needs, the kits needed for water purification, a folding knife utensils necessary for cooking, fire making tools, non-degradable foods and a first aid kit. Even with this basic survival gear you may be in trouble if you lack the necessary survival knowledge.

How capable you would be in your urban survival will depend on your skill to be completely self-sufficient and on your bug out bag contents. The tools available in the bug out bags can be as varied as the solar paneled back packs for charging the batteries, laptops and cell phones, and even portable toilets. Think any of such necessities and you will find it in a useful bug of bag.

Give some time and thoughts on it. Your bug out bag should contain all the crucial survival gears. So, it would be large; though, it must not be very difficult to carry it. It must be thrown out after some time, so that you can be sure that the ingredients inside are usable.

It would be tragic, if you fail to find help in your bug out bag during an emergency, due to wasted food or a non-operating battery system. People often do the mistake of filling their bug out bags with redundant items while missing on the necessary things. You should check your bug out bag from time to time to make it sure that all the provisions are in the working condition and are usable in case of an emergency. Take the responsibility on your shoulder to maintain a bug out bag yourself and do not expect your neighbour to come to your rescue, in case an emergency happens.
