All Natural Candles - Two Affordable Options

By Devin Krushanya

All natural candles have been around for literally thousands of years. Though, until recently, these all natural candles came only in the form of the very expensive beeswax candles. In the past, only the wealthiest could afford to buy beeswax candles. It wasn't until the 1990's, since the invention of soy wax, that people could actually afford to buy all natural candles on a regular basis.

These days beeswax candles are more affordable, but they are still very expensive. If you regularly buy candles, buying beeswax candles can definitely make a dent in your budget. Thankfully, these aren't the only natural candles out there. Recently on the scene are soy candles and palm wax candles.

Soy wax candles:

Soy candles are the most popular option as far as all natural candles are concerned. There are a couple reasons for this. Firstly, as compared to paraffin candles, soy candles burn much longer and have a better scented throw (they disperse the fragrance more effectively). Although beeswax does burn longer than soy wax, it is far more expensive.

Not only that, but beeswax has a natural scent of honey when it is burned. It's a lovely scent, but what if you don't like the smell of honey, or simply desire another fragrance altogether? Or what if you don't want a fragrance at all?

When you burn soy wax, it burns almost completely without an odor. This is very advantageous if you want your candle to smell of any other fragrance that may not complement the smell of honey. In fact, unscented soy candles are becoming quite popular these days.

Pure soy wax candles always come in the form of a jar or container candle. Pure soy wax pillar candles simply do not exist. Soy pillar candles contain other botanical oils such as palm oil to help the soy wax hold its shape. Another benefit to soy candles that most people don't realize is the benefit to the US economy. Soy beans are one of the largest crops grown in the US.

Candles made with palm wax:

When compared to the popularity of soy wax, palm wax candles are still relatively unknown. However, palm wax actually predates soy wax by a considerable margin. Palm wax is sometimes said to burn even cleaner than soy wax and burns completely with odor.

Besides the benefit of a long and clean burn, palm wax candles have a very unique appearance that is usually described as feathered or crystal-like. Palm wax pillar candles will reflect the light as you rotate the candle. It is truly spectacular.

I feel I must mention that there is one potential downside to these natural palm wax candles. There are palm oil manufacturers in many parts of Asia that are supposedly cutting down rainforest to make room for palm oil plantations. The only thing you can do here is make sure you know where your palm wax is coming from, which can be tricky.

More and more people are becoming aware of their responsibility to minimize their carbon footprint on our earth. One way to do this is to not by petroleum based products such as paraffin candles. Beeswax candles, soy wax candles and palm wax candles are all better for our environment than continuing to rely on non-sustainable petroleum based products such as paraffin candles.
