All Natural Candles: A Necessary Choice

By Devin Krushanya

In the past couple of decades, more and more people are beginning to realize that we need to take better care of our earth. Many of us are taking steps to better our environment by being more conscientious about the products they purchase and how those products affect the environment. It is thought that one of the major culprits responsible for global warming is our use of petroleum and petroleum based products such as paraffin candles. If you love both candles and our earth, switch to all natural candles.

Right now, the three main types of all natural candles are soy candles, palm wax candles and beeswax candles. Paraffin candles are still the most popular but not for long. Soy candles are becoming more and more popular each and every year.

The oldest all natural candles are without a doubt beeswax candles. The issues with beeswax candles are the price tag which can be up to 5 times the price of soy candles or palm wax candles. Palm wax candles aren't the newest on the scene, but they're the least known. The appeal of palm wax comes from its long burning time and also the appearance of the candle which can be described as a feathered crystalline look.

Soy wax has become more popular every year since its inception in 1992. Because soy wax is more viscous than palm wax or beeswax, this all natural candles usually ends up in a jar. In fact, despite what many people think, there is no such thing as a "pure" soy pillar candle. In order for the soy wax to hold its shape, it needs to be blended with other botanical oils, such as palm oil.

Although palm wax is candy for the eyes, the palm oil is harvested overseas and in recent years, questions have been raised about the sustainability of palm oil candles. If you want to support the US economy, soy wax is definitely the way to go since the US is on the top of the list for the production of soy beans, not to mention, soy beans are a renewable resource.

There are obvious environmental benefits of burning soy candles as opposed to paraffin candles, but those are the only advantages. Soy candles have better burning properties than paraffin candles. Soy based candles burn up to 50% longer than paraffin and also has a better scent throw, which means it is better as dispersing the fragrance into to air.

All natural candles are truly a necessary choice. If we continue to use petroleum based products as opposed to all natural products, we risk permanently damaging our fragile environment. Using all natural candles instead of paraffin candles can really make a difference.

Any of these all natural candles are a better alternative to paraffin candles. Burning soy candles, palm wax candles or beeswax candles is simply the responsible thing to do, and in the case of soy wax, the economically sound thing to do.
